Description

“Topanga Canyon is home to two couples on a collision course. Los Angeles liberals Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher lead an ordered sushi-and-recycling existence in a newly gated hilltop community: he a sensitive nature writer, she an obsessive realtor. Mexican illegals Candido and America Rincon desperately cling to their vision of the American Dream as they fight off starvation in a makeshift camp deep in the ravine. And from the moment a freak accident brings Candido and Delaney into intimate contact, these four and their opposing worlds gradually intersect in what becomes a tragicomedy of error and misunderstanding.”

At the least, everyone living in a border state should read this book. But, really, I think every American should because it has the power to shift your thinking. It sure shifted mine.

The Tortilla Curtain is a realistic story that tells the stories of several illegal immigrants, both good and bad. Although I still feel that immigrants should follow the legal path into any country, I now understand that this is an idealistic opinion. If I had been unlucky enough to been born into Mexico, or any country rife with poverty and corruption, I would do anything it took to give my children a better life—just like hundreds of thousands of parents who have entered the U.S. illegally in order to give their kids a fighting chance. I’m pretty sure all the high powered pro-wall people would fight equally as hard for their kids.
