The Last Ghost Series, Book 1

“Over one hundred years ago, Emma Rose Finnis was born and died in the remote northern California town she now haunts. When she was alive, she was a lowly chambermaid and worse, a Finnis. Now, no one remembers her hardworking life and her grand dreams—because there are none left to remember. In a world where phantoms are considered “unclean,” the spirits of her town have already been removed. All except Emma Rose.

But when a determined hunter arrives with instructions to extinguish her once and for all, Emma Rose refuses to be hounded from her haunt, the stately Lambry Mansion. She’s earned her place and she’ll keep it—even if it means waging a war on the living. After all, she’s got nothing left to lose. The same might not be said for those who still enjoy the luxury of a breath . . .”

For what is a ghost, what is a ghost, except a voice in your head you should pay attention to, but don’t?

The Last to See Me is a literary gothic ghost story set in the tiny coastal town of Benito in northern California. The story is told from the POV of the ghost of Emma Rose, a young housekeeper who died tragically, full of hopes and dreams, in the early 1900s.

Emma Rose was an amazing character who you get to know intimately as she tells her heartbreaking story. Other characters — Phillip (the ghost hunter), Ellen (a distant relative of the owner of the haunted house and real estate agent), and Alice (the last of the family to live in the house) — are not nearly so well developed.

The story switches back and forth from the present, when Phillip is trying to learn the identity of the ghost so he can destroy it, to the past, where you learn exactly what happened to Emma Rose.

While well written and an enjoyable read, I was disappointed on two fronts:

I was sure the author was building up to a legitimate twist that would swoop me off my literary feet. Unfortunately, that didn’t end up happening.

The sudden ending was one of those WTH ones where you have to go searching for answers in former reviews. Fortunately, I found out I wasn’t the only one who was totally confused.

If the ending would have been both more original and understandable, this book could very well have squeezed a 5 star out of me and I would have immediately bought the second book in this series. But, it wasn’t, so I won’t. It will simply remain an entertaining read that won’t be added to my cerebral library of unforgettable books.
