Description

“On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy. In Cold Blood is a work that transcends its moment, yielding poignant insights into the nature of American violence.”

“Imagination, of course, can open any door—turn the key and let terror walk right in.”

In Cold Blood is the fiction-esque non-fiction story of a horrendous crime. In the late 1950s, two small-time criminals planned to rob a wealthy farmer in Kansas. When they didn’t find what they were looking for, they murdered the entire family, consisting of a 15 year old son, 16 year old daughter, wife/mother, and husband/father.

Truman Capote started off writing a story for The New Yorker magazine about the impact of the murder on the local community and ended up writing a in depth book on the entire case that became a classic and made it onto the pages of 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die.

A much easier read than I expected—and an insightful one as well. Not only do you learn a bit about the family and a lot about the murderers, Perry Smith and Dick Hickcock, but you get serious insight into how a criminal becomes a criminal.

Although intelligently written and a literary classic, it was not overly intellectual or a laborious read. In fact, I’m now interested in reading more by Truman Capote and have added several of his other books to my TBR list.

If you enjoy the book, do what I did and right after you flip the last page of the book, rent Capote (2005; with Philip Seymour Hoffman), In Cold Blood (1967; with Robert Blake), and In Cold Blood (Mini Series) (1996; with Sam Neill)…all on Amazon Prime!
