hike to a playa venao waterfall
The size of a Playa Venao waterfall is highly dependent on rainfall. From a month into the dry season until a month into the rainy season (approximately mid-January to mid-May), our smaller, local waterfalls shrink down to a trickle or completely dry up. If you do go in the rainy season, be on the lookout for cabezas de agua (flash floods).
Just up the road from Vista Cañas is Eco Venao, a reforestation eco “resort” that has multi-handedly planted thousands of trees in the last 13 years. They are one of the few local businesses who actually care about the environment here.
The Playa Venao waterfall located on their property is small to medium in size, depending up on the amount of rain. You’ll take an easy hike through the forest to get there and there is a very good chance you’ll see one or more of the three local species of monkeys that live in the area.
The trail is pretty well marked and begins just behind the restaurant…just follow the sign for “Cascada Trail.” Before you start your walk to this Playa Venao waterfall, you’ll need to register and pay.
To really get your money’s worth, keep following the trail all the way up to the top of the mountain. Your chances of monkey sightings increase substantially and, once you reach the top, you’ll find a bench with one of the best views of Playa Venao.
directions:
After entering Eco Venao’s main driveway (on the north side of the road), park near the restaurant and look for the sign for the “Cascada Trail,” just a little ways past the restaurant on the left. The trailhead is directly behind the restaurant on the right and is easy to follow all the way to the top of the mountain.
