Description

The House of the Spirits, the unforgettable first novel that established Isabel Allende as one of the world’s most gifted storytellers, brings to life the triumphs and tragedies of three generations of the Trueba family. The patriarch Esteban is a volatile, proud man whose voracious pursuit of political power is tempered only by his love for his delicate wife Clara, a woman with a mystical connection to the spirit world. When their daughter Blanca embarks on a forbidden love affair in defiance of her implacable father, the result is an unexpected gift to Esteban: his adored granddaughter Alba, a beautiful and strong-willed child who will lead her family and her country into a revolutionary future.”

Green hair. Magical women. Passion. Rage. Family. Idealism. Love. Coups. Charity. Torture. Hope.

What an incredibly beautiful story. I totally get why it made the 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die list.

Isabel Allende is one of my favorite authors. She is the mistress of character development and a weaver of magical stories that become a part of you forever. She’s also one of a few authors who can make me read paragraphs that last for pages without griping (too much).

The depth and strength of her female characters are why I come back to her books again and again. Clara, Férula, Blanca and Alba are among the very best.

On a practical and captivating level, this story will enlighten you on the political dynamics of many Latin American countries, particularly the evolution of a military coup.
