In 1903 Mary Boulton flees alone across the West, one heart-pounding step ahead of the law. At nineteen, she has just become a widow–and her husband’s killer. As bloodhounds track her frantic race toward the mountains, she is tormented by mad visions and by the knowledge that her two ruthless brothers-in-law are in pursuit, determined to avenge their younger brother’s death. Responding to little more than the primitive instinct for survival at any cost, she retreats ever deeper into the wilderness–and into the wilds of her own mind.

I thought I would love this book, but it was only a 3 star for me. For some reason, I couldn’t deeply connect with the main character, Mary. The writing was good, capturing Mary’s perilous journey as she runs from her dead husband’s two brothers who are intent on killing her in revenge for their brother’s death, as well as the bleak landscape of the Canadian Rockies. Mary is not always likeable, but she’s incredibly strong, resourceful and brave, so you’re rooting for her to survive as the men close in on her. Throughout her perilous journey, the reader is introduced to a host of quirky characters that complete the picture of life in the Wild West.
