“Nine-year-old Oskar Schell has embarked on an urgent, secret mission that will take him through the five boroughs of New York. His goal is to find the lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his father who died in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. This seemingly impossible task will bring Oskar into contact with survivors of all sorts of an exhilarating, affecting, often hilarious, and ultimately healing journey.”

“I think and think and think, I’ve thought myself out of happiness one million times, but never once into it.” — This is just one example of the brilliant quotes to be found in this book.

And, what a quirky and unique book it is.

It’s the story of a precocious young boy who lost his father in 9/11 and is determined to discover the meaning of a mysterious key that belonged to his dad.

I can’t say I’ve ever read a book quite like this before—sometimes it’s hard to follow as it meanders through different narrators sharing their story in imaginative ways, but it’s never dull or predictable and it always has you thinking. Jonathan Foer has Roald Dahl level imagination and whimsy.

Chuckles, tears, laughter, even the occasional picture and oddball writing technique…this book takes you on a touching ride through post-9/11 NYC.
